History & Heritage on the Essex Coast

Dive into the rich history and heritage of the coastal towns in Essex.

Harwich, a town steeped in history, is a must-visit destination on the Essex coast. It’s presumed to be the launch point of the Mayflower and birthplace of Captain Christopher Jones; Harwich offers a glimpse into the past. The Harwich Redoubt Fort, a circular fort built in 1808, now serves as a military museum, hosting battle re-enactments and other events during the summer months. For a unique experience, consider a seal-watching tour from Harwich. To complement your visit, stay at The Pier at Harwich Hotel, a stunning Venetian-style hotel offering breathtaking seafront views and a delicious seafood restaurant.

Further south, the charming Maldon District invites you to explore quaint sailing villages like Tollesbury and Heybridge. Take a leisurely stroll along the sea wall or embark on a relaxing cruise aboard a vintage sailing barge with Topsail Charters

History buffs will appreciate the Chapel of St-Peter-on-the-Wall in Bradwell-on-Sea, the oldest church in England, built by St Cedd in 564 AD. St Cedd is the patron saint of Essex, and he is remembered each year on St Cedd’s Day, or Essex Day, on 26th October. This historic site, situated at the end of the St Peters Way, offers stunning coastal views.
